Occupation authorities extend detention of minor from Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, March 7, 2025 (WAFA) – Israeli occupation authorities Friday extended the detention of a Palestinian minor from Ath-Thori neighborhood in the occupied West Bank city of Jerusalem.

The occupation authorities extended the detention of Tuqa Ghazzawi, 12, to Monday, March 10.

On Thursday, March 6, Ghizzawi was detained after the school day had ended, and she was subsequently brought before a court, which ruled in favor of extending her detention until next Monday.

According to the latest figures from Addameer, the Palestinian Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, there are currently 9,500 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons and detention centers, including 350 child prisoners and 21 female prisoners.

This number includes approximately 3,405 Palestinians placed under “administrative detention”, which allows the detention of Palestinians without charge or trial for renewable intervals ranging between three and six months based on undisclosed evidence that even a detainee’s lawyer is barred from viewing. The mass arrest of Palestinians is nothing new. According to a 2017 report by Addameer, over the past 50 years, more than 800,000 Palestinians have been imprisoned or detained by Israel, this figure is now believed to be closer to 1 million. This means that about 40% of Palestinian men and boys living under military occupation have been deprived of their freedom. Almost every Palestinian family has suffered the imprisonment of a loved one.

According to statistics published by institutions concerned with Palestinian detainees, the number of Palestinians detained under Illegal Combatants Law from the Gaza Strip is 1,555, though this number does not include all Palestinians detained from the Strip and who are held at Israeli occupation army’s camps.
