Israeli artillery shelling kills eight-month-old toddler and her mother in Bureij camp

GAZA, Saturday, August 24, 2024 (WAFA) – Israeli artillery shelling today hit a house in Bureij refugee camp in the central war-torn Gaza Strip, killing an eight-month-old toddler and her mother and injuring others, according to a medical source in al-Awda Hospital.

The source said that the bodies of a toddler along with her mother, who were both killed in Israeli artillery shelling in Buriej camp, were transferred to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the withdrawal of the occupation forces from the northern areas of Khan Younes in the southern Strip revealed large-scale destruction of civilians’ residential buildings and properties.

The destruction was particularly severe in Hamad City, a neighbourhood northwest of the city, with scores of apartments demolished and towers flattened, as confirmed by eyewitnesses.

They added that dozens of residential buildings were levelled and reduced to rubble in the northern areas of the city and civilians’ lands and properties were razed.

They pointed out that first aid and rescue teams were busy searching for missing persons in the areas invaded and targeted by the Israeli army.

They added several bodies and dismembered remains were recovered and transported to the Nasser Medical Complex in the city.

This came as medical sources announced that the bodies of 60 civilians who were killed since dawn Saturday and over the past two days in the southern Strip in addition to the bodies of 11 others killed in other parts of the Strip were transported to the Nasser Medical Complex.

The Israeli invasion of North Khan Younes has resulted in the forceful displacement of thousands of civilians from their houses to the western areas of the city as well as to the central Strip.

Israel has proceeded with its genocidal offensive on the war-torn Strip in complete disregard of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which ordered Israel in a legally binding decision to halt its military offensive in Rafah, which may violate its obligations under the Genocide Convention.

Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, killing at least 40,334 Palestinians, mostly children and women, and injuring over 93,356 others.

Moreover, at least 10,000 people are unaccounted for, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes throughout the Strip.

Palestinian and international organizations say that the majority of those killed and wounded are women and children.

The Israeli aggression has also resulted in the forceful displacement of nearly two million people from all over the Gaza Strip, with the vast majority of the displaced forced into the densely crowded southern city of Rafah near the border with Egypt – in what has become Palestine’s largest mass exodus since the 1948 Nakba.
