Palestinian family forced to demolish own home in occupied Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, Saturday, July 6, 2024 (WAFA) – This evening, Israeli occupation authorities compelled the Qanbar family to self-demolish their home in the neighborhood of Jabal Mukaber, occupied East Jerusalem, citing unauthorized construction.

Recently, the Israeli municipality imposed a hefty fine on the Qanbar family before issuing a final demolition order for their six-year-old home, where seven people reside.

In an attempt to avoid a financial penalty of 80,000 shekels (equal to $21,500), the family undertook the demolition themselves rather than face the destruction by Israeli bulldozers.

According to a report from the Jerusalem Governorate for the past year, Israeli authorities have carried out 292 demolition operations in the Jerusalem Governorate, including 73 structures that owners were forced to demolish.

Meanwhile, the Wall and Settlement Resistance Authority says that Israeli authorities demolished 318 structures in the occupied West Bank during the first half of 2024 and issued demolition notices for another 359 structures. Additionally, approximately 10,000 trees were uprooted.
