RAMALLAH, Wednesday, September 6, 2023 (WAFA) – In a meeting today with President Mahmoud Abbas at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, the Irish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense, Michael Martin, affirmed his country’s support for a political settlement based on United Nations resolution and the two-state solution.
President Abbas briefed his guest on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, specifically the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, their land, and their holy places.
He stressed that the continuation of unilateral steps by the Israeli occupation authorities, in addition to settler terrorism, increases tension and drags the region into a square of escalation and violence whose results no one can predict, which requires effective international intervention to stop the deterioration and implement the resolutions of the international legitimacy.
The President praised the bilateral relations between the two countries, stressing that the State of Palestine looks forward to strengthening and developing these relations in the interest of the friendly Palestinian and Irish peoples, praising the Irish provision of scholarships to Palestinian students.
The President stressed the importance of the role that Ireland can play through its membership in the European Union to provide support to the political process in accordance with international legitimacy, and in urging Europe to support the Palestinian quest for full membership in the United Nations in order to create the atmosphere for a political horizon that ends the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine and its capital, East Jerusalem, on the 1967 borders.
For his part, the Irish Minister affirmed his country's firm position in support of achieving a political settlement based on international legitimacy and the two-state solution.
He pointed out that Ireland will continue to provide support to the Palestinian people, especially in the area of scholarships for Palestinian students.
