Newspaper Review: Assaults by Israeli settlers in West Bank focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, June 19, 2022 (WAFA) – Assaults by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians and vulnerable communities in the occupied West Bank were the main focus today of the Palestinian Arabic-language dailies.

Al-Ayyam wrote in its main headline: “Injuries and arrests [among Palestinians] in a series of attacks by Israeli settlers in Jericho, Jerusalem and Hebron under [Israeli] army protection.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also highlighted: “Several [Palestinian] citizens wounded, six others arrested in the aftermath of an attack by settlers west of Jericho.”

On a different story, Al-Quds said Israeli fighter jets carried out a series of airstrikes yesterday in the besieged Gaza Strip in a fresh outbreak of tensions, but no injuries were reported.

Al-Ayyam also said Israeli fighter jets attacked several targets in the Gaza Strip after a rocket was fired into the Israeli settlement of Asqalan.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said six Palestinian detainees remain on hunger strike in protests of their administrative detention, without charge or trial, by the Israeli occupation authorities.

Al-Ayyam quoted Israeli occupation’s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid as saying that “Israel” will make all it can to curb Iran’s nuclear program.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam quoted Mahmoud Al-Aloul, Deputy Chairman of President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah Movement, criticized the lack of a US condemnation of the daily Israeli killings of Palestinians, saying Washington has made no efforts to stop Israel’s practices.

The two dailies said Palestinians held a memorial mass yesterday for slain Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh at a church in occupied Jerusalem.
