Palestine records 1,009 new Covid-19 cases, 20 deaths

RAMALLAH, Monday, January 4, 2021 (WAFA) – Palestine today recorded 1,009 new Covid-19 cases and 20 deaths, according to Health Minister Mai al-Kaileh.

Al-Kaileh announced that 1,009 Palestinians tested positive for the highly contagious virus and 20 others died of it in the occupied territories.

Among the new 1,009 cases, 648 cases were confirmed in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and 361 others in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In the West Bank, Ramallah remains at top of new cases with 158 cases, followed by Hebron (108), Nablus (105), Tulkarm (71), Jenin (58), Bethlehem (44), Jerusalem suburbs (45), Tubas (22), Qalqilia (18), Salfit (12) and Jericho (7).  

Al-Kaileh identified the 20 deaths as 15 death cases from the West Bank and five others from the Gaza Strip. The West Bank deaths were distributed as follows: one in Qalqilia, seven in Hebron, three in Nablus, one in Jenin and three in Ramallah.   

She said that 1,413 Covid-19 patients recovered in the occupied territories; 903 recovery cases in the West Bank and 510 others in the Gaza Strip, as 113 others are hospitalized in intensive care units, including 23 who are connected to ventilators.

According to the latest coronavirus data, the confirmed cases in the occupied territories (West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza) reached 160,043.

Out of the 160,043 cases, 99,490 are recorded in the West Bank, 42,738 in the Gaza Strip and 17,815 in East Jerusalem.

Recoveries have totaled 139,215, and the death toll reached 1,629, leaving a total of 19,199 active cases.

Recoveries account for 87.0 percent of total cases since the pandemic outbreak in March, active cases for 12.0 percent and the death toll accounts for 1.0 percent.
