Newspapers review: Settlement construction, settler attacks focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, October 07, 2020 (WAFA) – Plans for the construction of new colonial settlements besides to the new round of settler attacks dominated the front page headlines in Wednesday’s issue of the Palestinian Arabic dailies.

 Al-Quds reported that the Israeli military issued order to seal off 3,000 dunams of olive-planted farmland in the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam reported that the Israeli occupation authorities were to approve new colonial settlement construction plans to block off Palestinian towns.

It added that the plans includes the construction of 2,500 new colonial settler units.

Covering settler attacks, al-Ayyam said that armed Israeli settlers carried out new attacks against Palestinians.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida elaborated that settlers erected a new colonial settlement outpost on lands belonging to Beit Dajan town, east of Nablus city.

They added that settlers assaulted Palestinian shepherds to the east of Yatta town, in the southern West Bank.

According to al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida, a number of Palestinians were injured from Israeli military gunfire in a raid that triggered confrontations in Aqabat Jabr refugee camp, southwest of Jericho, and Aida camp, north of Bethlehem.

They added that Israeli forces rounded up nine Palestinians in multiple West Bank raids.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that President Mahmoud Abbas congratulated his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on the 47th anniversary of the October War victory.

Highlighting the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the dailies said that 10 COVID-19 fatalities were recorded in the occupied territories in the last 24 hours.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added that 475 new infections were recorded in the occupied territories. According to al-Ayyam, 477 new infections and 714 recovery cases were recorded.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added that 102 new infections were recorded in Jerusalem in the last two days and that 155 others were recorded among Palestinians in the diaspora.

According to al-Quds, 69 Israeli settlers besides to security and intelligence officers forced their way into Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Israeli ‘Defense’ Minister Benny Gantz orders to seize the funds transferred to Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails and families of slain Palestinians.

Secretary-General of Fatah Central Committee Jibril Rajoub was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida saying that the Palestinian leadership would never accept any plan that infringes upon the Palestinian people’s rights.

Al-Ayyam printed a news analysis titled incendiary balloons are flown again in Gaza skies, risking a re-escalation.

Regionally, al-Quds said that Fatah delegation discussed with the delegations of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) the means to complete pan-Palestinian dialogue in Damascus.
