AMMAN, October 16, 2009 (WAFA)- King Abdullah II of Jordan warned Friday that Jerusalem is a red line and any tampering with its historic identity will trigger catastrophic repercussions on the security and stability of the region and on efforts exerted to achieve comprehensive Mideast peace , that meets aspirations of all parties.
In a meeting with the visiting Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Zapatero, the King affirmed that the unilateral Israeli measures cannot be accepted, warning they will undermine opportunity at hand to make peace and need a firm and clear int'l stance to stop them.
He urged the international community and EU to take an effective position against these Israeli acts , that seek to change the identity of Jerusalem and threaten its holy sites.
The King and Prime Minister reviewed latest efforts aimed to relaunch Palestinian-Israeli negotiations based on terms of reference and according to a clear working plan , that builds on what has been achieved on previous rounds of talks.
The King said the international community should exert further concerted and effective efforts to resume negotiations and to ensure real progress is made towards peace, which is an int'l and regional necessity.
He praised the serious and effective role assumed by the EU to end the regional conflict , adding Jordan hails EU's 'frank and clear' stances aimed to achieve peace on the two-state solution , which is the sole gateway to resolve this conflict.
The Monarch also hailed Spain's role to help reach Mideast peace, adding Jordan is looking forward to working with Spain to further accelerate solution efforts, when it assumes rotating presidency of EU early next year.
