DWRC Concludes Course on Statistical Analysis for Trade Unionists

RAMALLAH, October 15, 2009 (WAFA)- Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center (DWRC) conducted a three-day training course in Ramallah on statistical analysis for Palestinian trade unionists, in cooperation with the Federation of Independent Trade Unions-Palestine and other partner unions, and under an EU-funded project for protecting trade union rights.

Twenty-six female and male trainees participated in the course, representing the Telecommunications and Information Technology Union, Governmental Teachers, Public Service Employees’ Union, Pharmaceutical Industry Workers’ Union, Health Services Employees Union, General Union of Disabled Palestinians, General Union of Electricity Sector Workers in Palestine, Medical Technology Union, Young Unemployed Graduates Federation, the Assistant Pharmacists’ Union and the Ramallah-Al-Bireh Water Authority Employees’ Union.

Based on a new training material developed by DWRC with the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics to enable union leaders to understand and use statistics in their collective bargaining and dialogue with employers’ organizations and the government, the course covered a range of topics, including an introduction to the fields in which statistical data is useful, sources of statistical data, ways to express and present statistics, structure and content of statistical reports, classification of statistical data and how to read statistical tables, using statistics in union work for influencing policies, definitions and vocabulary specific to labour force and poverty indicators. 

Ms. Lana Nazzal, from the Health Service Employees’ Union, said that the course enriched her comprehension of statistics and that she believes that it will have positive effects on her capacity as a unionist to plan, evaluate, and implement activities. Mr. Badi’ Abu Hadid, from the Electricity Union, also stressed the importance of the course in strengthening the trade union movement and reinforcing its developmental role at the national level.

Trainers included Dr. Hamdi Al-Khawaja and Wajih Al-Ayasseh from DWRC, and Mr. Mohammed Qalalwa from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
