Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight new corona cases, exchange of Ramadan greetings

RAMALLAH, Saturday, April 25, 2020 (WAFA) – The new cases of coronavirus in Palestine as well as exchange of Ramadan greetings between President Mahmoud Abbas and his counterparts were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

While the report on the new coronavirus cases was the main front-page story in al-Quds and al-Ayyam, the Ramadan greetings between President Abbas and his counterparts was the main front-page story in al-Hayat al-Jadida.

The papers said Al-Aqsa Mosque remained closed on the first Friday of Ramadan when usually hundreds of thousands of worshippers from all over the Palestinian territories attend the noon prayer during the fast month of Ramadan.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed pictures of Muslim worshippers praying in the open outside the closed Al-Aqsa compound with some distance between them as required by law in the time of coronavirus outbreak.

The papers also reported about the corona cases among Palestinians in the diaspora as well as in Israel and the world at large.

Al-Ayyam said first coronavirus cases were reported yesterday in a Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon.

It said a Palestinian detained last week by Israeli soldiers was placed in isolation after he tested positive for coronavirus.

Al-Quds said Israeli settlers chopped 33 olive trees south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus and that several Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli soldiers in Kufr Qaddoum, also in the north of the West Bank.

It also said China and other countries have warned against Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian territory.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on this topic and said the Palestinian and Jordan foreign ministers have warned against annexation of occupied land, which they said is a violation of international law.

It also had a report about Hamas seizing land in Gaza by claiming it was state land and distributing it among its officials.
