Newspapers Review: Address of President Abbas at cabinet meeting highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, February 4, 2020 (WAFA) – Remarks President Mahmoud Abbas made at the Palestinian cabinet meeting yesterday in which he briefed the ministers regarding the American so-called peace plan were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

Al-Quds main front-page headline quoted Abbas saying; “We either take all our rights in full or Israel has to shoulder its responsibilities as an occupying power.”

It also, in a separate story, quoted US official Jared Kushner threatening, “If the Palestinians do not accept our conditions, then Israel should not recognize them as a state.”

Al-Ayyam main front-page headline quoted the president saying: “We are moving on all levels to face the (US) deal and we will not accept the US cancelling all international references.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also quoted Abbas saying: “We will not go back on our position before the Americans and Israelis retract their plan.”

In other main front-page news, the three dailies highlighted the government decision to ban entry of certain Israeli products into the Palestinian market in retaliation for Israel’s ban on Palestinian agricultural products. These include vegetable, fruits, mineral water and juices.

Al-Quds said, quoting the head of Wadi Hilweh Information Center located in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, Israel is attempting to take over property of the Greek Orthodox church in Silwan and that dozens of Palestinian families in Silwan are under threat of expulsion from their homes, which will be turned over to Jewish settlers.

It said in another item that Israel is going to take over a road in the north of the West Bank to expand an illegal settlement.

It said, based on figures by the settlers, that there are 150 illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank where over 460,000 settlers live.

Al-Ayyam said Palestinians were injured yesterday from attacks by Israeli settlers and soldiers in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

It said dozens of settlers participated in a provocative march in the occupied northern Jordan Valley.

It also reported on the meeting in Uganda yesterday between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Sudanese leader Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, and quoted Palestinian official Saeb Erekat describing the meeting as a stab in the back of the Palestinian people.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has rejected the American plan while stressing that peace and security in the Middle East will come only with the end of the Israeli occupation.

It quoted Palestinian official Nasser al-Qudwa saying that Israeli annexation of any Palestinian territory is the end of the negotiations process.

It said a Palestinian political prisoner from inside Israel had his first baby born from a sperm smuggled from his prison cell in Israel.

The paper also reported on the finding in Ramallah of a boy from Jericho who has been missing for three days in what turned out to be a family affair.
