Foreign Ministry opposes referring to Israel as birthplace of Americans born in Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, September 04, 2019 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates warned today against referring to Americans born in Jerusalem as born in Israel, stressing that this would violate international law and American court rulings.

It said in a statement reacting to remarks by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which he said that they are considering including in the passports and other documents reference to “Jerusalem-Israel” as the birthplace of Americans born in Jerusalem.

It said there were attempts in the past to do this but that US court decisions have blocked it.

“The ministry believes that the mere thought of this is a flagrant violation of international law and the international legitimacy and its decisions,” it said, adding that it rejects this measure and considers it another hostile step by the administration of US President Donald Trump against the Palestinian people that will undermine any opportunity for peace on the basis of a two-state solution.

It said it is consulting with legal parties regarding the most effective ways to deal with this step if the US administration starts implementing it, including going to the US courts.
