Israeli police used excessive violence against protesters in Haifa, rights group says

NAZARETH, May 19, 2018 (WAFA) – Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, blamed Israeli police on Saturday for using excessive violence to disperse peaceful protesters who were demonstrating in Haifa, northern Israel, last night against the recent Israeli massacre in Gaza.

“[Israeli] police abuses did not stop at this point. The police prevented the protesters from moving or going home after they dispersed the protest by force,” Adalah said in a statement on Saturday.

Adalah also accused Israeli police of assaulting some of the 21 protesters who were arrested by the police from the scene of the protest, and that four of the protesters were moved to hospital after being beaten up by the police in custody centers.

The police also tried to prevent the lawyers from entering to see the detainees at the police station, according to Adalah.

Adalah called for the immediate release of the detainees and said Israeli police detained them for only practicing their freedom of expression.
