RAMALLAH, October 27, 2026 (WAFA) — Sixty members of the European Parliament have called on EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas to convene an urgent meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers to reach consensus on imposing sanctions on the Israeli government.
The call came in a letter sent to Kallas on Monday evening by lawmakers from different political groups within the European Parliament.
The lawmakers said Israel had imposed a blockade on the occupied West Bank since last Friday, describing the measures as amounting to “collective punishment.”
“By resorting to collective punishment, which constitutes a war crime under international law, the Israeli government seeks to consolidate its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and further escalate tensions during Israel’s elections,” the letter stated.
The lawmakers also cited the demolition of Palestinian homes in Hebron, noting that some families had been given no more than five minutes to evacuate their homes. They described the developments as “a decisive turning point for the future of the West Bank and the viability of a Palestinian state.”
They stressed that the European Union “cannot remain silent” in the face of what they described as Israel’s large-scale assault on the West Bank.
The lawmakers urged the bloc to condemn the Israeli measures, call for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the West Bank, and convene an urgent meeting of foreign ministers to reach an agreement on imposing sanctions on the Israeli government.
Israeli forces have imposed a blockade on the Hebron governorate, particularly the al-Jalda and Deir Bahha areas of the city, for the fifth consecutive day. The number of families affected by the offensive has risen to 619, while around 3,971 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced from their homes and 85 others arrested.
These developments come amid escalating attacks by Israeli forces and violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, including occupied Jerusalem, since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
