BETHLEHEM, October 17, 2026 (WAFA) – The State of Palestine celebrated the inscription of the Sebastia archaeological site on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a national and historic achievement that reflects Palestinian efforts to protect and preserve cultural and human heritage and strengthen Palestine’s presence on the international stage.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Hani al-Hayek stressed the success of Palestinian national efforts to inscribe Sebastia on the World Heritage List, noting that the achievement would enhance the site’s historical and human significance and support efforts to protect and preserve it from the risks and challenges it faces, foremost among them Israeli occupation measures.
He emphasized that the designation goes beyond international recognition of an ancient site, describing it as a triumph for Palestinian national identity. He added that the listing affirms the deep civilizational roots and historical continuity of the Palestinian people, reinforcing their right to protect and preserve their cultural heritage for future generations.
Al-Hayek stressed that heritage protection is not limited to preserving stones and archaeological landmarks, but begins with the people who belong to a place, preserve it and pass its story on to future generations.
He affirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ responsibility does not end with the site’s inscription on the World Heritage List; rather, a new phase of joint efforts begins to protect and develop the site and enhance its tourism profile, contributing to sustainable tourism development.
