Egypt summons Colombian chargé d’affaires to protest Colombia's opening of embassy in occupied Jerusalem

CAIRO, October 16, 2026 (WAFA) – The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Colombian chargé d’affaires in Cairo to express Egypt’s strong protest and outright rejection of Colombia’s opening of an embassy in Jerusalem, describing the move as an unacceptable unilateral step that contravenes the city’s legal and historical status and constitutes a clear violation of relevant international resolutions, an informed Egyptian source said.

The Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported that the source stressed that the move is null and void and has no legal effect.

The source added that Egypt stressed during the summons that such irresponsible steps would negatively affect international efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region and could fuel tensions. The source also underscored the need to respect the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem and refrain from taking unilateral measures that could undermine prospects for achieving peace based on the two-state solution.

The summons comes in implementation of paragraph 10 of a resolution adopted last week by the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of permanent representatives, calling on member states of the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to summon Colombian ambassadors to convey a formal message of protest over Colombia’s unlawful decision to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem and its implications for bilateral relations with Colombia.
