CAIRO, October 16, 2026 (WAFA) — Foreign ministers from 19 countries, including Palestine, Egypt, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, condemned Colombia's opening of an embassy in occupied Jerusalem, saying the move contravenes relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and undermines international efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
In a joint statement, the ministers stressed that any measure or decision intended to alter the legal or historical status of occupied Jerusalem, or recognize it as Israel’s capital, is null and void and carries no legal effect.
They said this position is consistent with relevant UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, particularly Resolutions 476 and 478, adopted in 1980, which reject attempts to change the character or status of Jerusalem and call on states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city, which forms part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.
The ministers urged the Colombian government to reconsider and reverse its decision, fulfill its obligations under international law, and refrain from measures that undermine the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
