Foreign Ministry welcomes Human Rights Council election results, congratulates newly elected members

RAMALLAH, October 14, 2026 (WAFA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the results of the United Nations General Assembly elections to select members of the Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry congratulated the countries that won the confidence of the General Assembly and secured membership on the council, particularly fellow Arab countries and friendly states that support international law and the inalienable legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the State of Kuwait.

The ministry stressed the importance of these elections in strengthening the role and standing of the Human Rights Council as one of the main pillars of the international system for protecting and promoting human rights. It expressed the State of Palestine’s aspiration to continue working and coordinating with the newly elected member states in a manner that contributes to upholding the principles of justice, equality, respect for international law and international humanitarian law, strengthening accountability and combating impunity.

It underscored the importance of the Human Rights Council fulfilling its responsibilities to protect the rights of the Palestinian people and continuing to monitor the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian Territory.

It also stressed the need to implement the council’s resolutions and the recommendations of its independent international mechanisms, including fact-finding missions, to support international accountability efforts, and to hold those responsible for crimes and grave violations, including genocide, accountable. It further called for action to achieve justice, provide redress to the victims among the Palestinian people, and put an end to Israel’s policy of impunity as the occupying Power.

The ministry reaffirmed the State of Palestine’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination with all Human Rights Council member states during the council’s forthcoming term and to working jointly to enhance the council’s effectiveness and credibility, to reject double standards and selectivity in the application of international law, and to ensure that human rights are respected and protected without discrimination, including the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

It said these efforts should contribute to ending the Israeli occupation and realizing the independence of the sovereign State of Palestine within the borders of June 4, 1967, with Jerusalem as its capital.
