Medical sources: Gaza death toll reaches 74,254

GAZA, October 9, 2026 (WAFA) – The death toll from Israel’s ongoing genocidal aggression against the Gaza Strip has reached 74,254, while the number of injured has risen to 175,306, according to medical sources.

They explained that the most vulnerable groups, including children, women and the elderly, accounted for the largest proportion of casualties. A total of 21,976 children have been killed and 45,569 injured.

They added that 11,301 women have been killed and 24,537 injured, while 5,405 elderly people have been killed and 12,269 injured. The number of men killed stood at 35,555, with 92,892 injured.

They warned of the systematic targeting of children in the Gaza Strip, noting that Israeli occupation forces kill one child every 71 minutes.

They documented the killing of 1,125 children under the age of one, including 612 infants who were born and killed during the aggression, in addition to 5,444 children under the age of five.

The aggression has also resulted in 1,134 cases of amputation among children, left 71,846 children orphaned, deprived 914,102 children of education, and exposed 1,204,102 children to food insecurity. These conditions have led to a sharp increase in the mortality rate among children under five, reaching 33.4 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Regarding the healthcare system, the sources confirmed that out of 38 hospitals targeted, 19 hospitals have been completely taken out of service, while another 19 hospitals are operating only partially. These include five government hospitals and 12 field hospitals.

They added that Israeli occupation forces targeted 158 primary healthcare centers, 64 of which have been put out of service. A total of 1,723 medical personnel have been killed, while 362 have been arrested. Healthcare facilities have been targeted 825 times, and ambulances have been targeted on 216 occasions.

The genocidal aggression has caused a 121.9% decline in bed capacity and rendered all nine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines inoperative, along with most computed tomography scanners, oxygen stations, and power generators.

The sources pointed to the worsening threat of famine and the medicine crisis, reporting 466 deaths due to malnutrition, including 157 children, 48 women, 189 elderly people and 72 men. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women has risen to 61%.

They said that 44% of essential medicines and 54% of medical consumables are at zero stock levels. There is also an 83% shortage of laboratory testing supplies, a 71% shortage of laboratory consumables, and a 96% deficit in cardiac catheterization and open-heart surgery services.

Regarding patients awaiting medical evacuation, the sources stressed the catastrophic conditions facing patients and the injured who are being denied treatment. A total of 21,000 registered patients are awaiting medical evacuation to receive treatment abroad, including 5,803 children and 4,800 cancer patients.

They revealed that 2,027 patients have died while awaiting medical evacuation, including 264 children and 505 cancer patients. Meanwhile, only 2,853 patients have been evacuated since February 2026.

The sources warned of the severe psychological consequences for young people in Gaza, noting that 98% experience constant anxiety about their lives, while 62% feel miserable, exhausted, and helpless. Meanwhile, 56% meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The indicators also show that 39% experience persistent fear, according to the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale, while 61% suffer from moderate to severe anxiety and 57% from moderate to severe depression.

The sources renewed their call for urgent international intervention to halt the aggression and save the healthcare system.
