Egypt rejects Israeli minister's remarks over Sinai

CAIRO, October 7, 2026 (WAFA) — Egypt categorically rejected any attempt to invoke the Sinai Peninsula in statements made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich over the past two days, an informed Egyptian source said on Wednesday.

The source described Smotrich's remarks as empty threats and a transparent attempt to serve electoral objectives through escalatory rhetoric.

The source said the statements, which coincided with Egypt's celebrations of the 53rd anniversary of the October War victory, did not warrant any further assurances regarding Egypt's ability to protect its territory and safeguard its independence against any threats.

The source also described Smotrich's recent remarks concerning Sinai and the displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip as a transparent attempt to use inflammatory rhetoric for electoral purposes.

The source stressed that the international community is fully aware that the Israeli occupation bears responsibility for making living conditions in the Gaza Strip nearly impossible in an attempt to push Palestinians to leave their homeland and bring the Palestinian cause to an end, a policy Egypt has neither accepted nor will participate in.

Egypt also rejects any attempt to invoke its name for political purposes and remains committed to its policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states, the source said.
