CAIRO, September 16, 2026 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas today praised the positions of the Arab Republic of Egypt, its leadership and people, in support of the Palestinian cause.

The President commended the role played by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in supporting the Palestinian people and defending their national rights, as well as Egypt’s ongoing efforts to stop the war and end the suffering of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

President Abbas made the remarks during a meeting at his residence in Cairo with a group of Egyptian journalists, media professionals, opinion columnists, and broadcasters. The President briefed them on the latest developments in Palestine and the wider region and discussed the Palestinian political, field, and international situation.

President Abbas addressed the situations in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Jerusalem, highlighting the exceptionally difficult circumstances facing the Palestinian people while emphasizing their steadfastness on their land and categorical rejection of displacement.

The President pointed to growing shifts in the international position toward the Palestinian cause, noting that a growing number of countries worldwide have recognized the State of Palestine. President Abbas also highlighted a shift in U.S. public opinion toward greater sympathy for and support of Palestinian rights.

Citing the historical experience of South Africa, President Abbas explained how, through its political and diplomatic struggle and the accumulation of international recognition for its cause, it was able to reach the stage of ending the apartheid system, noting that the Palestinian cause is likewise moving toward greater international presence and recognition.

The President affirmed that the international community has come to recognize the two-state solution, based on international legitimacy, as a framework for ending the conflict and establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. President Abbas stressed the need for continued political and diplomatic efforts to safeguard this option and turn it into reality.

On the Palestinian internal front, President Abbas stressed the importance of holding Palestinian elections, particularly legislative elections and elections for the Palestinian National Council, as an important national entitlement to renew institutions, enhance political participation, and consolidate the Palestinian democratic system.

At the conclusion of the meeting, President Abbas emphasized the vital role of the Egyptian media in conveying the truth about what is happening in Palestine and highlighting both the suffering and the national rights of the Palestinian people. The President affirmed that the Egyptian media represents an influential voice in defending the truth and keeping the Palestinian cause present in Arab and international consciousness.
