Fahmy: Ministerial meeting held amid deep concern and utmost seriousness over ongoing Israeli escalation

CAIRO, September 7, 2026 (WAFA) – Tunisia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Nafti, stressed that the humanitarian suffering endured by the Palestinian people can in no way be normalized or reduced to mere statements, statistics, and figures recited at international meetings.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy at the conclusion of the 166th regular session of the Council of the Arab League at the foreign ministers' level, today, Nafti reaffirmed Tunisia’s steadfast and unconditional support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them their inherent right to establish an independent, fully sovereign state on their land, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He said the Arab region is witnessing unprecedented developments and increasingly complex challenges that require stronger Arab solidarity and concerted action to confront attacks and military escalation and bring an end to the humanitarian tragedy endured by the Palestinian people.

Nafti stressed that the Palestinian cause remains at the forefront of the priorities of joint Arab action, as a cause of rights, justice, and human dignity, affirming that the grave violations and continued suffering endured by the Palestinian people cannot be allowed to become an imposed reality that the international community simply coexists with.

He said there can be no path to achieving security and stability in the Middle East and the world without fully ending the Israeli occupation, stressing that what is required is not merely “managing the crisis,” but bringing it to a complete end and enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate historical rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination and the establishment of a fully sovereign and independent state.

For his part, the Arab League Secretary-General affirmed that developing and reforming the system of joint Arab action, particularly the League of Arab States, is an ambitious and legitimate goal for confronting the growing challenges threatening Arab national security.

He added that the ministerial meeting was held amid deep concern and utmost seriousness over the ongoing Israeli escalation and violations in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon, as well as unequivocal Arab rejection of attacks and the use of force in the Gulf region, referring in this regard to Iranian attacks targeting several Arab countries.

The Secretary-General affirmed that Arab consultations focused on the need to move beyond issuing statements and declarations toward taking practical and tangible actions and measures.

He noted that the Jerusalem Committee had issued a statement addressing Israeli violations, and that the council discussed specific proposals submitted by the Palestinian Foreign Minister to protect Jerusalem and its holy sites.
