Egypt condemns E1 settlement project, warns of division of West Bank

CAIRO, August 20, 2026 (WAFA) — Egypt today condemned the Israeli government's publication of a tender for the E1 settlement project, warning that it would divide the West Bank, encircle East Jerusalem and sever it from its Palestinian surroundings, undermining geographical contiguity between Palestinian territories and threatening prospects for an independent and viable Palestinian state.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the project constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and relevant international legitimacy resolutions, undermining the foundations of the two-state solution and prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace.

Egypt expressed its full rejection of attempts to impose a fait accompli through illegal settlement expansion and alter the legal and demographic status of the occupied Palestinian territory, threatening prospects for implementing the two-state solution.

Egypt called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and take serious and effective steps to halt such violations, reaffirming its commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
