German MP backs call for Germany to formally recognize State of Palestine

BERLIN, August 18, 2026 (WAFA) —  Macit Karaahmetoğlu, a deputy member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Parliament and a lawmaker from the Social Democratic Party (SPD), expressed his support for a call by Palestine’s Ambassador to Germany, Laith Arafeh, for Germany to recognize the State of Palestine.

In a press statement, Karaahmetoğlu said that a majority of countries around the world, including several European countries such as France, Spain, and the United Kingdom, have recognized the State of Palestine.

He added that Germany’s recognition of the State of Palestine would serve as an effective lever in support of the two-state solution.

He added that such a step has become necessary amid continued Israeli colonization under the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. He stated that this government seeks to impose new realities on the ground in preparation for the annexation of Palestinian lands in the West Bank and to geographically fragment the territory.

Karaahmetoğlu affirmed that he would continue working toward these goals, and thanked Ambassador Arafeh for what he described as frank dialogue and a relationship of mutual trust.
