RAMALLAH, August 15, 2026 (WAFA) – The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Mohammed Al-Yamahi, sent official letters to the National Assembly and the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as the European Parliament, affirming his rejection of any moves or intentions to withdraw recognition of the State of Palestine or relocate the Slovenian embassy to occupied Jerusalem.
Al-Yamahi emphasized that these letters come in light of reports circulating about the Slovenian government's intention to take measures that constitute a clear violation of international law and resolutions of international legitimacy, and undermine international efforts aimed at implementing the two-state solution and ending the occupation
He emphasized that recognizing the State of Palestine is not a temporary political measure that can be reversed, but rather a legal and moral obligation that embodies respect for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination—an inalienable and non-negotiable right recognized by the majority of the world's nations.
He warned that moving any embassy to occupied Jerusalem constitutes a clear violation of Security Council Resolution 478 (1980) and contravenes relevant international resolutions, particularly Resolutions 242, 338, and 2334. Furthermore, it contradicts the European position, which affirms that the status of Jerusalem is a final status issue that can only be resolved through negotiations and in accordance with international law.
In his letter to the European Parliament, he also called for the utilization of all parliamentary and political tools to maintain the European position supporting Palestinian rights and to prevent any attempts to legitimize the occupation's policies based on annexation, settlement construction, and the imposition of a fait accompli.
He noted that the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, clearly affirmed the obligation of all states not to recognize the illegal situation arising from the Israeli occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory and not to provide any support or assistance that contributes to its continuation.
Al-Yamahi emphasized that any withdrawal of recognition of the State of Palestine or any attempt to alter the legal status of occupied Jerusalem would only undermine the international order based on respect for international law and encourage the Israeli occupation to proceed with its expansionist policies, which threatens regional and international security and stability.
He reiterated that he would continue his efforts and contacts with various regional and international parliaments to mobilize international support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and to counter any attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause or diminish the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
