ILLINOIS, August 9, 2026 (WAFA) — A campaign calling on doctors and healthcare workers in the United States to resign their membership in the American Medical Association (AMA) and stop paying membership dues has gained momentum, protesting the association's inadequate response to Israel's war on Gaza and the detention of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya.
The campaign, promoted by groups including the US Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), CODEPINK, and Doctors Against Genocide, is calling on the AMA to take a stronger position on the treatment of Palestinian healthcare workers.
The demands also include calls for the AMA to divest from investments linked to Israel or those that organizers believe contribute to supporting the war in Gaza, as well as a petition urging the association to use its influence to demand the immediate release of Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya.
Organizers say the AMA has failed to take action commensurate with the conditions faced by medical workers in Palestine, arguing that continued membership dues provide a financial resource that can be used to pressure the association to change its policies and positions.
The campaign seeks to shift pressure on the AMA from protests, statements and appeals toward economic and institutional action by urging doctors and healthcare workers to reconsider their memberships and dues and demand more effective positions on protecting Palestinian medical personnel.
The campaign comes amid growing calls within US medical circles for action over conditions facing Gaza's healthcare system and medical workers, and for the protection of healthcare personnel in accordance with international humanitarian law.
