Fatah Central Committee discusses political developments, Gaza, and upcoming elections

RAMALLAH, June 18, 2026 (WAFA) – The Central Committee of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) discussed a range of political, organizational, and internal movement issues during a meeting held on Thursday.

Fatah Deputy Chairman Hussein Al-Sheikh briefed committee members on ongoing political developments and contacts with the United States administration aimed at redefining bilateral relations on clear foundations.

The committee also reviewed Israeli measures in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, highlighting settler terrorism, land confiscations, repeated incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque, daily detentions, and the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues.

The committee called for the swift completion of the second phase related to the Gaza Strip and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory.

It also praised efforts by Saudi Arabia to follow up on several issues aimed at advancing Palestinian-American-Saudi understandings.

Members discussed a number of social and public service issues, including education, healthcare, prisoners, and martyrs, as well as the continuation of the reform process and its implementation.

The committee further reviewed national obligations related to the general elections scheduled for November 1, 2026, including legislative elections in accordance with the Basic Law until a constitution is adopted, and the completion of the formation of the Palestinian National Council under the regulations of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The committee adopted several decisions, including continued political engagement with the international community to safeguard the two-state solution, halt unilateral Israeli measures and destructive actions in the West Bank, stop the ongoing bloodbath in Gaza, and advance reconstruction efforts.

It also decided to refer issues related to prisoners and martyrs to the specialized committee formed by President Mahmoud Abbas. In addition, it approved the formation of a committee to oversee legislative elections and the restructuring of the Palestinian National Council, another committee to follow up on the implementation of decisions adopted at Fatah’s Eighth Conference, and a third committee tasked with introducing necessary amendments to the movement’s internal regulations.

The committee also approved the return of a number of previously expelled members following requests submitted by them. It further agreed to continue consultations on assigning responsibilities among Central Committee members and movement commissions in accordance with internal regulations, with the process expected to be completed next week.
