Gaza health system warns of critical shortages threatening thousands of patients

GAZA, June 5, 2026 (WAFA) – A medical source in the Gaza Strip on Friday warned of a severe and escalating crisis threatening the lives of thousands of patients due to acute shortages of essential medicines and medical supplies, alongside the postponement of thousands of surgical procedures.

The source said more than 4,000 cancer patients and thousands of kidney dialysis patients are now at serious risk due to the shortage of essential and life-saving medications. It added that over one-third of items on the essential medicines list have completely run out.

According to the source, 726 types of medicines, medical consumables, and laboratory supplies are currently unavailable in central medical stores, including 180 essential medicines out of 520, and 50 oncology drugs out of 97.

It further noted a severe shortage of dialysis filters, surgical sutures, and cardiac catheterization materials, forcing the postponement of multiple medical procedures and operations.

The source also reported that 79 laboratory items and 265 specialized medical consumables have reached zero stock, while more than 11,000 surgeries have been delayed due to shortages and ongoing financial constraints.
