Canada demands independent investigation into Israeli detention of Gaza aid flotilla activists

RAMALLAH, May 26, 2026 (WAFA) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for an independent investigation into the treatment of activists on the aid flotilla bound for Gaza after their detention by Israel, describing the humanitarian situation in the Strip as "catastrophic."

In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office said that Carney told Israeli President Isaac Herzog during a phone call on Monday that the treatment of civilians, including Canadian citizens, on board the flotilla was "appalling and unacceptable," stressing the need for an independent investigation into the incident.

The statement added that Carney reiterated Canada's objection to Israel's illegal settlement expansion in the West Bank and to colonist violence and violations committed against Palestinian civilians.

The flotilla organizers reported that several activists released after their detention were subjected to abuse during their imprisonment, with some being hospitalized for various injuries, while others spoke of assaults and violations during their detention.

In a related context, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said she discussed the issue with her Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar, and informed him that Ottawa would provide Israel with information and evidence related to allegations of mistreatment of Canadian citizens who were on board the flotilla.
