RAMALLAH, April 23, 2026 (WAFA) – The United Nations described the destruction of a statue of Jesus Christ by an Israeli soldier in southern Lebanon as "shocking."
This came in a statement by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, during a press conference Wednesday evening.
Dujarric confirmed that the incident was "shocking," adding, "What is reassuring is that, according to reports, swift disciplinary action has been taken against the soldiers."
Responding to a question about whether it was contradictory for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu offered a swift apology and punished the soldiers, while nearly a thousand mosques have been destroyed in Gaza, Dujarric said, “You may describe it as you wish, but the destruction of religious symbols and places of worship is unacceptable, regardless of the religion.”
Footage emerged on Sunday showing an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ in the town of Dibil in southern Lebanon with a pickaxe, sparking widespread religious and political condemnation.
