AMMAN, February 9, 2026 (WAFA) — President Mahmoud Abbas met today with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman, in the presence of Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II, to discuss the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, regional and international issues of mutual concern, and ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries and their peoples.
Both sides strongly condemned recent decisions by Israel’s security cabinet aimed at deepening annexation in the West Bank, expanding settlements, and affecting the city of Hebron and the Ibrahimi Mosque. They affirmed that the measures represent a serious violation of international law and international legitimacy resolutions, and are intended to undermine Palestinian state institutions and the two-state solution.
President Abbas warned of the risks posed by the decisions to regional security and stability, particularly amid concerns over Islamic and Christian holy sites and with the approach of the holy month of Ramadan. He stressed the importance of joint Palestinian-Jordanian efforts to address the situation and emphasized Jordan’s role in protecting holy sites under the Hashemite custodianship.
The President called on US President Donald Trump to reaffirm commitments to halt displacement and annexation, referring to pledges made by the US administration during discussions last September in New York with Arab and Islamic leaders.
He also urged urgent meetings of the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the UN Security Council, as well as broader international and European action to confront what he described as annexation and escalating Israeli measures.
President Abbas reiterated the need to begin implementing the second phase of a US plan to end the war in Gaza, affirming the unity of Palestinian territory in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. He stressed the importance of a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the principle of a single Palestinian authority and lawful security framework.
The President renewed his appreciation for Jordan’s support for the Palestinian cause under King Abdullah’s leadership and for the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
The meeting was attended on the Palestinian side by PLO Executive Committee member Ziad Abu Amr, presidential diplomatic adviser Majdi Al Khaldi, and Palestinian Ambassador to Jordan Attallah Khairy. Jordanian officials present included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Intelligence Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni.
