GAZA, January 23, 2026 (WAFA) – An infant died due to extreme cold in the displacement camps this morning in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, according to medical sources.
The sources identified the child as Youssef Omar Abu Hammala, a six-month-old baby boy, who died in his family's displacement tent in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis.
With the death of Abu Hammala, the number of children who have died in Gaza due to severe cold since the start of winter has risen to 11. The deaths come amid a severe shortage of aid and a lack of heating.
The same sources said the incident reflects the dangerous humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip, especially for children and displaced families living in weak tents that are not suitable for cold weather.
Families in Gaza are suffering from a lack of shelter and medical care, and the absence of heating due to fuel shortages caused by the Israeli blockade.
