Government Operations Room warns severe storm threatens lives of displaced people in Gaza

RAMALLAH, December 28, 2025 (WAFA) – Update Issued by the Government Operations Room for Emergency Interventions - Gaza Strip on the Conditions of Displaced People in amidst the Current Harsh Weather Conditions:

* The Gaza Strip is experiencing a powerful and dangerous weather depression, more severe than previous ones, posing a threat to the lives of thousands of residents—particularly displaced people living in fragile tents and temporary shelters.

* Harsh weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, have intensified the suffering of displaced families, leading to the flooding and destruction of thousands of tents and the seepage of rainwater into them, amid a lack of safe heating options.

* The risk of flooding is increasing across large areas of the Gaza Strip, especially in regions with clay soil that prevents proper absorption and drainage of rainwater.

* The occupation’s sudden opening today of the Wadi Al-Salqa dam has created a risk of flash floods, threatening the lives of displaced people and destroying fragile tents in surrounding areas.

* The occupation’s launching of intense concussive airstrikes during periods of heavy winds and rain increases the likelihood of the collapse of partially damaged buildings, which some displaced people resort to as temporary shelters, thereby multiplying the risks to innocent civilian lives.

* During the most recent weather depressions, which were of moderate intensity, more than 53,000 tents for displaced people were damaged further exacerbating the humanitarian situation.

* Humanitarian organizations and relevant authorities are unable to fully respond to urgent needs due to a severe fuel shortage, which hinders the operation of heavy machinery required to open roads, remove rubble, and drain rainwater.

* The occupation continues to prevent the entry of prefabricated housing units into the Gaza Strip and allows only very quantities of tents to enter, increasing the vulnerability of displaced people and exposing their lives to grave risks.

* The Israeli aggression has resulted in widespread destruction in the housing sector, with approximately 295,000 housing units either completely destroyed or rendered uninhabitable.

* The Government Operations Room stresses that the Gaza Strip urgently needs around 200,000 prefabricated housing units to provide safer shelter for displaced people and to reduce the life-threatening risks they face under harsh weather conditions.

* The Government Operations Room renews its urgent appeal to the United Nations and international institutions to pressure the Israeli occupation to:

– Allow the immediate entry of prefabricated housing units and shelter supplies.

-Provide heating supplies, mattresses, insulation materials, and relief items.

– Support municipalities and relevant authorities with the necessary equipment and machinery.

– Provide pumps and mechanisms to help drain and remove rainwater from displacement areas.

– The Government Operations Room affirms that protecting civilians—especially children and the elderly—during this weather depression is an urgent humanitarian responsibility that requires immediate action and high-level coordination, emphasizing that accelerating the entry of prefabricated housing units, not tents, is the only solution to alleviate the suffering of displaced people
