Egypt welcomes UN adoption of two resolutions supporting Palestinian people’s rights

CAIRO, Dec 16, 2025 (WAFA) – Egypt on Tuesday welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption, by an overwhelming majority, of two resolutions reaffirming the Palestinian people’s legitimate and inalienable rights.

The first resolution addresses the Palestinian people’s permanent sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, while the second reaffirms their right to self-determination. Egypt said the two resolutions reflects the broad international consensus on the justness of the Palestinian cause and the imperative of upholding the rules and principles of international law.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two resolutions rest on firmly established legal foundations, foremost the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to the occupied Palestinian Territory.

The statement added that the resolutions also draw on the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, which found the continuation of the Israeli occupation to be unlawful, as well as the policies and practices linked to it, including colonists’ activities, the construction of the wall, and the illegal exploitation of Palestinian natural resources.

Egypt stressed that the Palestinian people’s permanent sovereignty over their land and natural resources, and their inherent right to self-determination, are inalienable rights, rejecting any practices that would undermine or erode them. It renewed its call to end the exploitation of Palestinian resources and to hold Israel legally accountable, including through compensation for the harm arising from such practices and the severe damage inflicted on the Palestinian environment.

Egypt also underscored the importance of the two resolutions’ clear call on states to abide by UN Security Council Resolution 2234, and the need to distinguish between the territory of the State of Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territory, describing this distinction as a cornerstone for preserving the two-state solution and preventing the entrenchment of the occupation or the imposition of illegal realities on the ground.

Egypt renewed its full support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, affirming that it will continue its political and diplomatic efforts to end the Israeli occupation and enable the Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights, foremost among them self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
