Minister of Education discusses strengthening cooperation with UNESCO Director-General

RAMALLAH, December 11, 2025 (WAFA) – Minister of Education Dr. Amjad Barham met today with UNESCO Director-General Dr. Khaled Al-Anani to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between the State of Palestine and UNESCO in support of the Ministry’s efforts to develop the educational system and align Palestinian curricula with UNESCO standards.

Dr. Barham affirmed the Ministry’s commitment, under the directives of President Mahmoud Abbas, to fulfilling the international obligations outlined in the National Reform and Development Program, stressing that the Ministry continues to work toward improving the quality and sustainability of education.

He also briefed the UNESCO Director-General on ongoing Israeli violations against the Palestinian educational and cultural sectors, including the recent assaults by Israeli occupation forces on the campuses of Birzeit University and Al-Quds University, as well as the targeting of historical and cultural sites. He emphasized that these attacks pose a direct threat to Palestinians' right to education and to the protection of their heritage.

During the meeting, Dr. Barham outlined the Palestinian government’s programs and efforts to improve educational opportunities and update curricula to keep pace with global developments.

Deputy Minister Dr. Nafieh Assaf and Palestine’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Adel Attia, took part in the meeting.
