NEW YORK, June 12, 2025 (WAFA) – The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Thursday that "the US aid mechanism in the Gaza Strip will not address the worsening hunger, and the horrific Hunger Games cannot become a new reality."
In a post on X, he described the model for distributing this aid in Gaza, outside UN supervision, as "deeply humiliating, degrading, and putting lives at risk."
Lazzarini emphasized that "the United Nations has the knowledge, experience, and community trust to provide dignified and safe assistance."
The Commissioner-General urged UNRWA to allow humanitarian workers to carry out their work in the Strip.
The Gaza Strip has been suffering a catastrophic humanitarian crisis since the occupation closed all crossings on March 2, preventing the entry of food, medicine, aid, and fuel.
The ongoing war of genocide, which began on October 7, 2023, has left approximately 182,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, in addition to hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and a famine that has claimed the lives of many, including children, as well as widespread destruction of infrastructure affecting more than 75% of the Gaza Strip.
