Gaza’s eye care on the brink: 1,500 have lost sight, 4,000 at risk amid medical collapse

GAZA, May 11, 2025 (WAFA) — The health sector in Gaza is facing a catastrophic collapse in eye care services, with at least 1,500 Palestinians having lost their vision due to the ongoing Israeli aggression, and another 4,000 at imminent risk of blindness, according to medical sources.

Doctors report that the genocidal war and relentless Israeli bombardment have led to a near-total breakdown in surgical services—particularly for retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and trauma-related internal bleeding.

Gaza City’s Eye Hospital, the main facility for ophthalmic surgeries, now operates with only three heavily reused surgical scissors, dramatically increasing the risk to patients' lives and rendering timely interventions nearly impossible.

Critical medical supplies such as hyaluronic acid and ultra-fine surgical sutures are nearly exhausted. Many eye injuries caused by explosions urgently require these materials, and without them, treatment is impossible.

Medical staff warn that unless immediate international intervention provides emergency supplies and equipment, the hospital will soon lose the ability to perform any eye surgeries at all.
