President Abbas commends UN chief for rejecting displacement of Palestinians

RAMALLAH, February 1, 2025 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas has expressed his deep appreciation for UN Secretary-General António Guterres' firm stance against the displacement of the Palestinian people from their land.

In an official letter to Guterres, President Abbas praised the UN chief's commitment to international law, emphasizing that it serves as the best path to achieving security and peace in the region.

He particularly acknowledged Guterres' recent statements opposing the resumption of war and destruction in Gaza, calling for a sustainable ceasefire, and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid.

"We highly appreciate your firm rejection of the displacement of the Palestinian people and your support for the Palestinian Authority to assume its responsibilities in Gaza, including the administration of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt," Abbas wrote.

He also stressed the importance of geographically linking Gaza with the West Bank and initiating necessary reconstruction efforts.

The President reiterated his absolute rejection of any plans to forcibly transfer Gaza's residents to other countries, as well as any attempts to halt the operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

He urged the international community to provide essential support to the agency, emphasizing its irreplaceable role in assisting Palestinian refugees.

President Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to working with allied and friendly nations to accelerate Gaza's reconstruction under the administration of the Palestinian Authority and to ensure its connection with the West Bank.

He also underscored his continued efforts to achieve a just peace based on a two-state solution along the 1967 borders, in accordance with international resolutions, and to secure full UN membership for Palestine.

Concluding his message, President Abbas extended his best wishes to Guterres, commending his efforts in promoting global peace and security, and his unwavering support for the Palestinian people.
