UN General Assembly adopts two resolutions to support UNRWA and ceasefire in Gaza

NEW YORK, December, 12, 2024 (WAFA) – The United Nations General Assembly adopted by majority vote, on Wednesday evening, two resolutions to support the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

The draft resolution "Supporting the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East" received the support of 159 countries, with nine objections and 11 abstentions, while the draft resolution "Demanding a ceasefire in Gaza" received the support of 158 countries, with nine objections and 13 abstentions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates expressed its deep appreciation to the countries that sponsored, supported and voted in favor of the two resolutions, reflecting a continued commitment to the United Nations Charter, the principles of justice, human rights and international law.

It stressed that the renewed support for UNRWA is a clear message about the importance of continuing its vital role in providing basic services to Palestinian refugees and protecting their legitimate rights, and enhances regional stability.

In this regard, the Ministry reiterated that UNRWA remains the backbone of all humanitarian operations in Gaza, and that no organization can replace it or match its capacity and mandate in serving Palestinian refugees until they return to their homes in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 194.

Regarding the unanimous vote on the resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Ministry stressed that this position reflects the will of the international community to end the humanitarian catastrophe and genocide as a result of the ongoing Israeli aggression and the policy of siege and starvation.

It added that the resolution highlighted the importance of implementing Security Council Resolution No. (2735) of 2024, which stipulates an immediate ceasefire, and calls on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to establish new accountability mechanisms and support the implementation of the resolution.

The Ministry called on all member states of the United Nations to ensure the implementation of these resolutions on the ground, including facilitating unhindered access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, ensuring protection for civilians, and holding accountable those responsible for violations of international law.
