Foreign Minister urges UK to play a greater role in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza

RIYADH, Thursday, November 9, 2023 (WAFA) – Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki has urged the United Kingdom to play a greater role in achieving an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to provide relief to the Palestinian people suffering from the deadly Israeli aggression.

During a meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, al-Maliki emphasized that the only viable solution to prevent further aggression and escalation is the end of Israeli occupation, the implementation of the two-state solution, and the realization of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He further stated that, "given Israel's status as an occupying power, it has no legitimate right to self-defense, and its actions constitute a blatant assault on all aspects of life in Palestine, amounting to clear war crimes that require an immediate investigation by the International Criminal Court."

In response, the British Foreign Secretary expressed his country's conviction that the time has come to achieve the two-state solution and that granting the Palestinian people their rights is the key to end the conflict in the Middle East.

He also stressed that the United Kingdom, along with influential global actors, must work towards achieving a just peace once the war comes to an end.
