President Abbas discusses difficult developments in Palestine with Venezuelan counterpart

RAMALLAH, Monday, October 16, 2023 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas received Sunday night a telephone call from his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, during which they discussed the latest difficult developments in the Palestinian territories.

President Abbas stressed during the call the need to immediately stop the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, provide them with protection and allow urgent humanitarian corridors to be opened to the Gaza Strip and provide people there with medical supplies, water, electricity, and fuel.

President Abbas renewed his complete rejection of the displacement of our people from the Gaza Strip, because “that would be a second Nakba (catastrophe) for our people,” he stressed.

President Abbas affirmed his rejection of killing civilians on both sides and called for the release of civilians, prisoners and detainees on both sides.

He reaffirmed the rejection of violence, commitment to international legitimacy and signed agreements, peaceful popular resistance and political action as a path to reaching our national goal, stressing the necessity of seeking a political solution that ends the occupation.

President Abbas also stressed that the policies, programs and decisions of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) are what represent the Palestinian people as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, and not the policies of any other organization.

President Abbas thanked his Venezuelan counterpart for his positions in support of the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state on their national land, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also thanked Venezuela for its responsible role and commitment to international law in international forums.

For his part, the President of Venezuela affirmed his country’s position in support of the Palestinian people in their quest to restore their legitimate rights to freedom and independence, praising the approach followed by President Abbas, which is based on dialogue, diplomacy and peace.

He stressed that he has decided to send urgent humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, calling for achieving peace and security in the region.
