Health Minister urges international protection for hospitals amid Israeli bombardment

RAMALLAH, Saturday, October 14, 2023 (WAFA) – Minister of Health, Mai Alkaila, said today that the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip has had a devastating toll on medical personnel, resulting in the murder of 28 healthcare workers and the injury of many more.

Alkaila pointed out that 15 medical facilities have been damaged due to Israeli bombardment, causing severe disruption to healthcare services. As a result of this, she said, the Beit Hanoun Hospital and the Al-Durrah Children's Hospital have been forced to suspend operations. Furthermore, 23 ambulances have been rendered inoperative.

Alkaila reiterated her urgent appeals to the international community, the United Nations, human rights organizations, and humanitarian bodies to swiftly provide protection for hospitals, medical centers, ambulances, healthcare staff, and the patients and the wounded who are being subjected to daily Israeli bombardments across Gaza.

She added that Israeli occupation forces continue to threaten hospitals in Gaza with forcible evacuation, putting the lives of hundreds of patients and casualties at risk.

The situation is particularly dire for the Al-Durrah Children's Hospital, which was evacuated recently after being targeted with internationally prohibited white phosphorus.
