JERUSALEM, Monday, May 8, 2023 (WAFA) – A memorial mass was yesterday held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Israeli army killing of Palestinian-American veteran al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
The service, which was organized by the late journalist's family, took place at the al-Liqaa Melkite Greek Catholic Church in the Beit Hanina neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem and was attended by her friends and colleagues.
Lina Abu Akleh, the journalist's niece, described the service as "beautiful."
"One-year memorial mass for my dear aunt Shireen Abu Akleh. It was a beautiful service," said Lina Abu Akleh on Twitter. "The priest said Shireen exemplified truth and was the voice of truth. May your memory be eternal. I miss you, always."
On May 11, 2022, Abu Akleh was killed during an Israeli army assault in the northern West Bank city of Jenin.
The Ministry of Health said Abu Akleh was hit by a live bullet in the head. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
She was one of the most known faces among Al-Jazeera correspondents.
