Premier urges US to reopen its consulate general in occupied Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, Friday, September 3, 2021 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called today upon the United States to reopen its consulate general in occupied East Jerusalem and to lift the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) from the US terror list.

Shtayyeh’s call was made during a meeting in Ramallah with a visiting delegation of the US House Democrats, composed of representatives Chris Murphy, Richard Blumenthal, Chris Van Hollen, and Jon Ossof.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of working to open a serious and new political path to end the Israeli occupation through the International Quartet, on the basis of international law and the United Nations resolutions.

During the meeting, Shtayyeh reiterated his demand to the US administration to press Israel to respect the agreements signed with the Palestinians, to put an end to its violations of Palestinian human rights, and to stop its colonial settlement construction in the occupied territories.

The Prime Minister also discussed with the delegation the importance of directly strengthening bilateral relations between the United States and Palestine, and praised the US administration's resumption of financial support to the UNRWA, and the resumption of development and infrastructure projects.

Shtayyeh said the two-state solution is facing a real danger as a result of Israel's ongoing settlement policy and land-grab, stressing that the continuation of the status quo will have demographic and security consequences.

He also called for exerting serious pressure on Israel to allow the Palestinian elections to be held in Jerusalem, as stipulated in the signed agreements, in order to restore the democratic process and restore intra-Palestinian national unity.
