Newspapers Review: Israeli demolition of mosque, structures in the West Bank focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, January 28, 2021 (WAFA) – Israeli occupation army demolition of a mosque that was under construction in the occupied West Bank, along with other structures and uprooting hundreds of trees were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Quds daily also said that Israel built 57,000 new housing units in its illegal settlements in the occupied territories last year.

Al-Ayyam daily said the Israeli occupation forces raided a community in the Jordan Valley and removed caravans placed by local residents on their lands to serve as shelters.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily said the Arab foreign ministers are going to meet next month to support the Palestinian cause.

Al-Quds said that following an intervention from Jordan, restoration work at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem carried out by the Islamic Waqf department and obstructed by the occupying power, Israel, has resumed.

The coronavirus pandemic was also highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies and said that five people have died of the disease yesterday and 608 new cases were recorded in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds said four people have died in East Jerusalem over two days and 150 new cases were recorded.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said 38 Palestinian prisoners at Rimon prison in Israel have contracted the disease, adding that there were calls for allowing Palestinian and international medical teams into the prisons to inspect the health of the Palestinian prisoners.

Al-Ayyam said that 100,000 doses of the Russian vaccine are expected in Palestine in February.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also highlighted activities of Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, including a meeting with the Belgium consul general and overseeing the signing of a water agreement with the French Development Agency.

Al-Ayyam highlighted news related to the holding of general elections in Palestine and quoted Fatah official Azzam Ahmad saying that the upcoming Cairo talks will discuss mechanism for the success of the elections and the idea of forming a coalition list.

It also quoted another Fatah official, Majed Fityani, saying that President Mahmoud Abbas has instructed that the Fatah list for the legislative council includes new and young members.
