Newspapers Review: Developments in the US, Israeli crackdown on Palestinian protests highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, January 09, 2021 (WAFA) – Developments in the United States with calls to impeach President Donald Trump in light of the breach of Congress on Wednesday, as well as the Israeli army crackdown on the weekly peaceful Palestinian protests against its occupation and settlement activities were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The main front-page story headline in al-Ayyam daily said that as Trump has announced his boycott of the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20, the Trump presidency is facing multiple problems including disintegration of his administration and calls for his impeachment.

The paper also reported on the aftermath of the attack on the Capitol and its repercussions.

On this topic, al-Quds daily reported the response of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to criticism that the US has become a “banana republic” in which he criticized such labelling.

It said that the US Congress was deliberating impeaching Trump, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for guarantees that Trump would not wage a nuclear war.

The third Palestinian daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, said on this topic but in the bottom half of the page in a headline that went across the page that the Trump administration is shaken and that the majority of Americans wants him impeached immediately.

It quoted Biden describing Trump as the most incompetent American president in US history. It also said the Congress incident showed the difference in treatment between blacks and whites in the US.

The three dailies also highlighted the Israeli army crackdown on the weekly Friday Palestinian protests against the occupation and the settlements.

Al-Quds daily said in its main front-page story headline that dozens of Palestinian were injured when Israeli occupation forces attacked the peaceful protests in various parts of the West Bank.

Similar headlines were published on the front page of the two other dailies with pictures of the army crackdown.

Al-Ayyam printed a picture of an elderly Palestinian confronting the soldiers and said on this that the soldiers have arrested the aged man, who comes from Deir Jerir in the Ramallah area.

The corona pandemic also occupied space on the front page of the three dailies, which reported on the toll at home, in the region, and around the world.

Al-Quds said the Israeli corona lockdown has prevented thousands of Muslims from reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem for the Friday prayer.

It quoted Fatah official, Jibril Rjoub, in a story on Palestinian reconciliation that the president of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission is going to meet with President Mahmoud Abbas within 48 hours and that based on this meeting, the decrees for the elections will be issued.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its top front-page story headline that President Abbas sent his condolences for the death of Anis al-Qassem, an expert in international law.
