President Abbas mourns former Fatah official Hakam Balawi

RAMALLAH, Saturday, November 28, 2020 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas mourned today Mr. Hakam Balawi, a former member of the Central Committee of Fatah Movement, who passed away today at the age of 82.

Balawi was born in the village of Bala'a in the Tulkarm governorate in the West Bank in 1938. By 1965, he joined the ranks of the Fatah Movement and the national Palestinian movement from its beginning.

In the 1980s, he served as Deputy Representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Libya. By the time the leadership of the PLO moved to the Tunisian capital following its departure from Lebanon, Balawi moved to Tunisia where he started his work as the PLO’s Representative.

After returning to Palestine in 1994, he joined the secretariat of the National Security Council headed by the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
