President Welcomes Suriname’s Recognition of Palestinian State

RAMALLAH, February 2, 2011 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed Tuesday Suriname’s recognition of the Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

The President had met with the Surinamese President Dési Bouterse in a visit to Brazil in December 2010.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad Malki also welcomed the recognition, saying “the increasing number of countries that recognize the state of Palestine is a true accomplishment for the Palestinian diplomacy, and is a practical response to the policy of occupation and illegal settlements in addition to all the attempts to discredit the Palestinian leadership.”

The Surinamese president announced his country’s recognition and support of the independent Palestinian state within the borders of 1967 in a letter he sent to Abbas with the non-resident ambassador of Palestine in Brazil.

Bouterse also sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations stating his recognition of the Palestinian state.

The Palestinian state is being internationally recognized in efforts to push forward its birth.
