Israeli navy shoots Gaza fisherman, fishing zone reduced

GAZA, Tuesday, April 30, 2019 (WAFA) – A Palestinian fisherman was injured today after he was shot by Israeli navy boats off the Gaza City coast, according to Gaza fishermen.

They told WAFA that a fisherman was shot in the back with a rubber-coated steel bullet while sailing within the allowed fishing zone in the Gaza coast.

He was taken Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for treatment.

Zakaria Bakr, head of the of the fishermen committees in Gaza, told WAFA that the Israeli authorities went back on a decision to expand the fishing area to nine nautical miles and reduced it once again to only six nautical miles.

He said the navy also removed and destroyed all fishing nets the fishermen had placed at nine miles into the sea to catch fish.

The Israeli action came after the army charged that Hamas fired missiles into the sea as a test, one of them apparently fell close to an Israeli seaport but in international water.
