Newspapers Review: Reaction to Kushner’s remarks, death of Palestinian focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, June 25, 2018 (WAFA) – Official Palestinian reaction to US President Donald Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner’s remarks and the death of a Palestinian young man in Gaza dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Monday.

Al-Quds said Palestinian officials have rejected Kushner’s remarks promoting economic and humanitarian solutions to the Palestinian question at the expense of the Palestinian people’s fundamental rights.

It reported unidentified political analysts arguing that Kushner’s remarks during an interview over the weekend with the Palestinian newspaper al-Quds “reveal that the US administration is already experiencing a crisis.”

Al-Ayyam reported Palestinian officials stating that Trump’s administration would fail to pit the Palestinian public against their leadership.

It also reported President Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor for foreign affairs and international relations Nabil Shaath stating that Trump’s envoys were Israelis more than being Americans.

Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s Executive Committee Saeb Erekat stating: “Certainly, the end of Israel’s occupation ]and the fulfillment of our political rights[ is a matter of consensus among all Palestinians that are united on the vision.”

He was also reported stressing that money will not compensate for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. He reportedly said: “Plain and simple: Palestine and Palestinian rights are not for sale.”

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that a Palestinian young man succumbed to his wounds he had sustained a few days ago after being shot by Israeli snipers, east of Khan Younes, in the southern besieged Gaza Strip.

The man, identified as Osama Khalil Abu Khater, 29, was shot and critically injured by Israeli snipers as he partook in one of the Great March of Return protests.

Highlighting the situation in the besieged Gaza Strip, al-Quds reported that kites and balloons dangling burning rags launched into Israel from the besieged Gaza Strip sparked a total of 30 fires in Gaza periphery settlements.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli drones and artillery targeted Palestinian protestors flying kites, along Gaza’s eastern border, injuring three.

The dailies reported that Israeli settlers set fire to a total of 300 olive trees belonging to Tell village, southwest of Nablus.

According to al-Ayyam, Fatah movement has resumed participation in the meetings of the Palestinian Islamic and Nationalist Factions’ Follow-up Committee.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Abbas congratulated his Turkish counterpart on the “successful democratic process” and winning Turkey’s presidential elections.

It reported the Arab League warning of an Israeli scheme to impose Israeli curricula on Palestinian educational institutions in Jerusalem.

Furthermore, al-Quds reported that Britain’s Prince William has arrived in Jordan at the start of his Middle East tour.
